Dynamic Cladding works with practically every material imaginable and is well versed in most forms of design. One of the many facade types we specialize in are glass and stone ventilated facades.
Ventilated facades – what are they?
Ventilated facades are a type of cladding where a cavity which functions as an air cushion lies behind the surface material. It tends to be used for exterior cladding and allows for drainage and ventilation, enabling the flow of inside and outside air. The cladding is usually fixed to a framework, frequently metal, that is attached to the facade.
What are the benefits of a ventilated facade?
One of the great advantages are the thermodynamic aspects of this type of cladding. On one hand, the surfaces can reflect the heat emanating from the sun. On the other, the layer of insulation helps keep the cool in during warmer months. Likewise, in the winter this insulation helps preserve a building’s warmth. This translates to long-term savings in heating and air conditioning.
Another benefit is the style’s sound absorption properties. Because of the layers and the air cavity, much of external sound is absorbed by the setup and is also partially reflected by the external layer. Also, the aforementioned constant flow of inside and outside air drags moisture out of the facade which helps preserve the structure.
How to use ventilated cladding
Though there are many mechanical and aesthetic benefits to ventilated cladding, it is a complex system to implement which requires professionalism and specialization. This type of project requires among other things the management of openings, the size and particularities of specific slabs, and the environmental context. When constructing a ventilated facade over an existing building a whole other suite of considerations comes into play, as you are dealing with the properties of a preexisting building.
On such a project one must carry out a feasibility study which takes into account the materials on the lower layer of the facade. It must also identify the structure to be implemented, the materials to be used on the ventilation layer and make all pertinent calculations. The selection of anchoring devices for the structure, what will secure the outer layer’s slabs, is critical.
